Although the Bag-of-Blues program has only been on the air for nearly two years, the Blues program has been around since 2002. Back then it was called the Pocket Full of Blues and it was run by on air personality Benny Gilardi a.k.a. Bobby Van Wrecker. Benny ran the Blues show till 2003 when student announcer Jared Talbot took over, and the program’s name was changed to the Blues Cruise by then station manager Wayne Cain.
In 2004 April Thomas took over the remainder of the year, and in the spring of 2005 is when on air personality Ben Pletcher ran the show. Around the summer of 2005 is when I took over the Blues program. The show already had a strong following and most of the music was already in the system.
The first thing that I did was change the name of the show to the Bag-of-Blues. There were two things that bothered me about the name Blues Cruise; one it sounded a lot like the Nickelodeon television show Blues Clues, and the last thing I would want to think about on a cruise is the Blues.
If you’re a long time listener then you’ve noticed I’ve taken out a lot of Jazz Blues and Zydeco Blues. My plans with the program now are to start doing spotlights on Blues artists during the week and to start interviewing local artists. I hope that this direction will give fans of the show something new and exciting to listen to.
