KSLU Wins Best College Radio Station and 1st place in Radio News Reporting at 2020 Southeast Journalism Conference

HAMMOND – KSLU took home top honors in the Best College Radio Station and Radio News Reporting categories this past weekend during the Southeastern Journalism Conference competition in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. 

KSLU sportscaster and “Half Time Adjustments” host Adam Cortez represented 90.9FM during the on-site competition, placing 1st in Radio News Reporting.  A junior communication major and adam cortezSoutheastern Louisiana University track athlete, Cortez took home first place honors for his news package covering the African American History Museum in Hattiesburg.  

Recent graduate, Connor Ferrill, helped KSLU earn the Best College Radio Station title for the second year in a row.  His daily newscasts featured exclusive stories with in-depth interviews from newsmakers.  Ferrill’s high level of professionalism and ability to convey complex information in an easy to understand manner set him apart from other competitors in the field.

 The 2020 Southeast Journalism Conference, hosted February 13-15, at the University of Southern Mississippi, celebrates student journalism and offers an opportunity for participants to develop relationships with students from schools across the Southeast United States. KSLU regularly participates and places in conference events, taking home “Best College Radio Station” and “Best Radio Journalist” in the 2019 competition.

 Cortez’s daily Southeastern Sports Minute can be heard on 90.9 FM at 7:35am and 8:35am Monday through Friday. “Half-Time Adjustments,” KSLU’s weekly video sportscast, is available at facebook.com/90.9KSLU. “Half-Time Adjustments” focuses on the latest news and commentary on SLU athletics, along with interviews featuring student athletes, coaches, and supporting organizations. New episodes air Fridays at 4:30pm, and archived episodes are available under the videos tab.  

Available on terrestrial radio, online, and through digital streaming apps, KSLU opens the door for student broadcasters to pioneer their own programs, creating something uniquely their own, and uniquely Southeastern. Programing includes music, live broadcasts of sporting events, and community-oriented talk shows.
